Marc Clayton - Tabla teacher A trip to India in the late nineties was my starting point and after a few days in Varanasi I began to discover the rich and expansive world of Indian Classical music. This stuff is addictive. It bears so little resemblance to music from where I'm from (England) or in fact most popular music of the world. It seems to reside in another timeframe and is free from most modern influence and short term trends. |

The beautifully expressive instruments work with melody in their own unique way, sitting in one key and often weaving between the conventional notes of the western scales. Each performance can be very long; the unhurried nature of the musicians reflects the spiritual weight placed on the music, which seems to have a deeper purpose than to just entertain; it can touch the soul if you let it. The roots of Indian classical music are very old and the history is murky and unclear by most counts. It is still very traditional in form and intrinsically intertwined with Indian culture and religion. Marc has been learning tabla for over six years. It was his devotion to tabla that inspired Marc and his wife, Natalie to come to India in October 2004, giving Marc the opportunity to further his studies. Over this time Marc came to realise the difficulties facing foreign students in knowing how best to further their understanding of this vast subject. He was keen to create a centre of learning that would resolve some of these issues, involving solid teachers that have a proven ability to teach as well as perform. In October 2005, Marc and Natalie started a business in South Goa combining a Healing Centre and a Music Centre. Marc teaches his own five day introductory tabla course from the Centre and Natalie gives Reiki workshops and treatments. For more information http://www.mnm.co.in/ |
